This year has been a little bittersweet for us. With JK going into Jr high and wanting to play Jr high ball as well as rec ball, we had to move him from Orting to Bethel. We knew the move was coming, but it was still a hard transition to wrap our minds and hearts around. Orting for us is safe. It was a smaller team and we knew JK had done a good job over the past few years working at really securing the quarterback spot there. A position he loves. After having a pre-season phone conversation with the Bethel coach, we had pretty much been told that as a new 7th grader coming onto a 7th/8th grade team JK would probably be seeing a lot of bench time. We were told that the team already had two very established quarterbacks and that the coaching staff would work with JK to find a position they felt he could best serve the needs of this new team. My heart sunk a little after this conversation. We tried to prepare JK the best we could, and just told him to go out there and do his best and to think of this year as a learning year.
After sitting through a month of practice and watching my boy give all that he had we entered into this weeks jamboree with my kiddo not only starting on defense, but also playing quarterback most of Saturday, and starting there Sunday. My little 7th grader who was supposed to be sitting the bench most of the the season, is one of just a few kids playing both offense and defense and starting at both! I hope I don't sound boastful, but to say I'm a super proud mama just doesn't begin to cover it. I love that JK's such a natural (those are the coaches words), but I'm proud of him for how hard he's worked at it. He knew that it was going to take lots of hard work, so he pushed himself giving everything he had each and every day.
Saturday the Braves were victorious over the Puyallup team. They played hard and showed how much talent this years team has. I think it's going to be a great season! I was pretty confident we wouldn't be seeing any other teams with as many big boys as Puyallup had, then we took on Federal Way Sunday. My goodness... I don't know what they feed those boys up there, but they were HUGE. All of them!! I was a little nervous just watching JK play on the same field as those kids. Our boys put up a good fight, but in the end came short of securing a second win for the weekend. While I hate excuses, I can honestly say we didn't loose because they were a better team. The flu plagued a number of our players Saturday evening and I know JK like so many others was pretty banged up sporting cuts bruises and a golf sized bump on his arm from a hard hit Saturday. With Bethel being Federal Way's first game of the weekend they came in with a huge advantage. It'll be fun to watch this game during the regular season when our team is healthy and as well rested as they were.
